There are indications that the ongoing strike of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may be called off this week. A lot of undergraduate students were excited by the news, as they hope to resume their academic activities. Many of them were cramming before upcomiing exams.
A young female 400-Level Theatre Arts student of University of Abuja, Miss Ronke Adefalujo, says she was excited upong hearing the ruomours that the ASUU strike might be over in the nearest future.
She recalls she was prevented to sit her final examination in August, as the strike started in July 2013. The examination table was issued already, and the students were looking forward to graduate in September.
"However, as soon as the strike is called off, we might start with revision and sit for some tests. Maybe within three weeks, we might sit for the final examination."
Tom Usen - another student, 500-Level Geology undergraduate of Federal University of Technology, Minna, - maintains that if ending the strike leads to improvement of education, it might mean "a brighter future" for Nigeria.
He said his institution was already in the middle of the semester when the ASUU strike commenced. The student explained that he would have rounded off his course by now, and regrets the 'extention of time' his colleagues and he had to undergo in their final year.
Miss Eno Ekere, a music undergraduate in University of Uyo, also says she is excited by the rumours. For now, though, she says she has adopted the 'wait and see' stance.
"In Nigeria, the way the government treats education is not all that encouraging. Children of commoners don't really have any say," she says.
