9 Die as commuter bus is attacked

Unconfirmed reports reaching us indicates that about 9 commuters where yesterday killed as a commuter bus conveying 13 passengers from Gbajimba in Guma local government area of Benue state capital was ambushed at Ajir village by suspected Fulani herdsmen, as at the time of filing this report, it was not certain if this nine people were either dead or still in hiding.

It was gathered that �the occupants who were mostly native Tiv farmers were traveling to Makurdi from Gbajimba at about mid-day yesterday when the heavily armed herdsmen waylaid and opened fire on them, killing at least two on the spot, four of the passengers managed to escape while seven others were chased into the bush by the assailants. This new incident has left all commuters traveling to and out of Gbajimba stranded as commercial motor operators have refused to travel that route.

�Our fear at the moment is that those that were chased into the bush might have been killed because no one knows their whereabouts and their families are yet to trace them.

�The search for them is still continuing but we are scared that they might have been killed because if they are still alive, we would have seen at least one of them, �exclaimed a witness.

The Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Deputy Superintendent of Police Daniel Ezeala disclosed that the Benue state Commissioner of Police had directed an immediate investigation into the matter and that search for possible survivors would commence immediately. Superintendent Ezeala said that �The assailants killed one of the occupants on the spot after shooting sporadically into the bus, but our men later recovered another corpse in the bush but that security has already been beefed in the community,� he added.

Since the incident occurred yesterday, most inhabitants of the community (which is less than seven kilometers from the heart of Makurdi) have all started fleeing into Makurdi town for safety.

Husband, Wife Sentenced To 3 Months Imprisonment For Fighting In Public

An Abuja Upper Area Court in Gwagwalada on Thursday sentenced a couple, Ibrahim Suleiman, 35, and Taiye Sunday, 31, to three months imprisonment each for fighting in public.

The judge, Alhaji Babangida Hassan, however, gave the couple an option to pay N15,000 fine each after they pleaded guilty to the charge and begged for leniency.

"The court finds both you, Ibrahim Suleiman and Taiye Sunday, guilty of the offence of disturbance of public peace for which you admitted to have committed.

"You are hereby sentenced to three months imprisonment each on the charge, with an option to pay N15,000 each as fine,'' the judge pronounced.

The prosecutor, Insp. Martha Paul, had earlier told the court that the convicts were arraigned on April 15 on a one-count charge of disturbance of public peace.

He told the court that the couple had on April 14 and April 15 at about 8.00 p.m. engaged themselves in a physical combat at the Wazobia Park in Gwagwalada.

He said that the offence which contravened Section 113 of the Penal Code attracts a three-year jail term.

Following the convicts' plea of guilt, the prosecutor urged the court to try them summarily. After the sentence was pronounced on them, the couple could not hold back their tears.

Woman Arrested For Violently Yanking Ex's Pen*s

Florida, U.S. - Police in Sarasota, Florida arrested a 22-year-old woman for assaulting an ex-boyfriend by violently grabbing and pulling his pen*s.

According to the reports, Laquavia Sharelle Wallace attacked Antonio Marquis Williams in his home in a dispute over whether or not the couple should resume dating.

Wallace had gone to Williams' residence to pick up their daughter, said a sheriff's report. Williams told police that he and Wallace started arguing when she suggested getting back together.

The arrest report stated that when Williams said he was not interested in resuming a romantic relationship with Wallace, she "grabbed Antonio's penis with her right hand and began pulling on it which caused pain to Antonio. Antonio defended himself by grabbing both the offender's forearms to prevent further violence."

Reportedly, a relative of Williams witnessed the altercation.

Williams told officers he did not want to file charges, but police took Wallace to the Manatee County Jail where she was charged with misdemeanor battery. She is set to appear in court on May 21.

India: Doctors Find Bottle, Candle Inside 5-year-old Rape Victim

Doctors in India have found a candle and bottle inside the body of a five-year-old girl who was repeatedly raped earlier this week.

The girl, who went missing from her home in east Delhi's Gandhi Nagar area on Monday (15 April), was found in a neighbour's house who lived in the same building, owned by her parents.

The neighbour is believed to have raped the child repeatedly, mutilating her genitals in the process, and attempted to strangle her before her screams eventually alerted rescuers.

The doctor who examined the girl at a hospital has described her rape as "one of the worst" cases he has ever seen and says "as of now, her condition is critical".

The girl has suffered major injuries to her genital region as well as superficial injuries to her lips, cheeks and chest. The girl's neck also bears deep bruises, indicating an attempt at strangulation.

Describing the condition of the girl when she was brought into the hospital, the doctor said "she was scared, not fully conscious" adding that "foreign objects like a candle and oil bottle were found in her body."

The victim is suffering from serious infection due to the foreign objects inserted into her body.

She has been kept in intensive care and doctors have told reporters the next 48 hours are crucial to her survival.

'Police told us to be quiet'

The neighbour apparently kept the girl hostage for two days, locking her up in the room he rented from her parents.

She was finally rescued when her screams were heard on the evening of 17 April.

The suspect is still at large but detectives have kept his father in detention while a police manhunt continues.

According to the girl's family, the police told them to keep quiet when notified of the girl's disappearance. When she was found, they refused to file a report or order a physical examination - instead suggesting that the parents take the girl home to recover.

"She went out to play two days back when she was kidnapped. The man then locked her up in his room and raped her. I want justice from the government," the girl's mother said.

Following the incident, outraged protesters gathered outside the hospital where the girl had been admitted, and chanted slogans against Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Delhi Police.

They have demanded an immediate arrest of the accused and for the girl to be transferred to a better-equipped hospital.

Teenager Hangs Himself After Listening To Music That Glorified Death

A schoolboy killed himself after listening to death metal music on his iPod, an inquest has heard.

Truman Edley, who was just 15 at the time of his death, hanged himself in the hallway of the family home in Rotherham after he had been listening to the violent music.

A coroner refused to name the band he was listening to or publish the extreme lyrics which formed part of the evidence at the inquest in Rotherham.

The official also noted that Truman had been suffering from a number of problems, and his mother said that he had 'self-esteem' issues.

The teenager, who was named after American indie band Trumans Waters, frequently listened to death metal through headphones.'

She discovered his body at their home in November 2011, two months after she had found him sobbing in his bedroom wardrobe.

On another occasion, she found scratches on his arm - he said that he had done it while messing around in the woods, but two friends asked him to visit a youth support service, fearing he had been self-harming.

Mrs Edley described her son as 'loving' and said he was fiercely protective of his loved ones.

'He was one of the most kind, loving and caring people,' she said. 'We told each other that we loved each other every day.

'He became a stereotypical teenager, like the Harry Enfield character Kevin. He was more interested in spending time with friends and took increasing pride in his appearance.'

But she added: 'His self-esteem was low. He didn't like himself or they way he looked very much. On the outside he showed a lot of confidence, but on the inside he was a lot more sensitive.'

Coroner Fred Curtis, who recorded a verdict of suicide at the inquest in Rotherham, commented on Truman's musical tastes saying: 'I'm not going to read the lyrics out, all I will say about them is they are extremely dark in content.

'They certainly deal with dark matters and, in some respects, seem to glorify death to some degree.

'It's also the view of the police officers in this case and Truman's mother who, not surprisingly was unaware of the content until after his death.

'Whatever the influences, I think it right that one can say there was no appreciation by anyone of the extent of his troubles and problems.

'There may be other factors behind these problems but I think the only person who can answer for those is Truman himself.'

PC Glyn Farrell, who attended the scene of the death, said he was a fan of death metal but admitted it could be depressive.

'I do listen to that sort of music myself, which has a lot of screaming with heavy guitar sounds,' he told the hearing. 'It can have an effect on people.'

Det Sgt Peter Hogson told the coroner: 'There seemed to be two Trumans. The outgoing one was a happy, bubbly joker who would make people laugh, was very well-liked and had a wide group of good friends.

'But then there seemed to be another, more fragile and sensitive individual who kept things from his family and bottled them up.'

Toxicology tests came back negative, and although a scribbled note was found at the scene it was unclear when it had been written.

Politician Threatens To Shoot Own Testicles If Son Marries Another Man

A tobacco magnate and Paraguay's leading presidential candidate is currently embroiled in a ferocious controversy over comments he made comparing gay people to "monkeys" and threatening to remove his private parts if his son married another man.

During a recent radio interview, Horacio Cartes, the 57-year old leading candidate for Paraguay's right-wing Colorado Party, compared the support of same-sex marriage to believing in "the end of the world" and threatened to become a eunuch if his 28-year old son wanted to marry another man.

"I would shoot myself in the testicles, because I do not agree."

Cartes used slightly more profane language to describe the act. The comments come as Cartes has also been hit with charges of money laundering and smuggling contraband Paraguayan-made cigarettes into neighboring Brazil.

While he still maintains a lead in the polls, recent data shows Cartes' numbers slipping in the run-up to Sunday's vote.

Cartes will face Liberal party candidate Efraín Alegre, who while sharing a conservative, business-oriented mentality, his stance on gay rights is deemed more open and nuanced.

"This is something that needs to be discussed in society," Alegre said of Cartes' comments.

He added that Cartes' feeling represented the "Paraguay of the past." The Paraguayan gay rights groups Somos Gay issued a statement condemning the comments as "cruel" and asked Cartes to make a formal apology.

"The Colorado Party claims to protect the Paraguayan family, claiming that if lesbians and gays become visible in our society, the traditional family will disappear," said Sergio López, a director of the group.

"But in fact, they are ignoring reality since that traditional family is no longer the norm."

Paraguay sits in a region that has made swift advancements in gay rights, with both Argentina and Uruguay recently legalizing gay marriage.

Man Arraigned For Raping Nursing Mother

A 28-year-old man, Morufu Rasheed, was on Wednesday arraigned before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate's Court for conspiracy, rape and theft.

Rasheed and two others at large were accused of raping a 27-year-old nursing mother (name withheld) at Palm grove end of Ikorodu Road, Lagos, while she was waiting to board a bus.

The charge read in part, "That you Morufu Rasheed and others at large on the April 13 about 10pm at Palm Grove Bus Stop, Lagos in the Somolu Magisterial District did conspire together to have carnal knowledge of (name withheld) without her consent and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 409 of the Criminal laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2011.

"That you Rasheed and others at large at the same date, time and place in the Lagos magisterial district did steal the sum of N100,00 belonging to the victim and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 2789(2A) of the criminal laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2011."

Rasheed pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Defence counsel, Mrs. Beauty Otigi, asked the court to grant the defendant bail. The prosecutor, Mr. Ishola Samuel, objected to the bail application on the premise that the complainant was a nursing mother.

He said, "The complainant is a nursing mother with a baby daughter. The trauma of the rape would still affect her while breastfeeding her child."

The Magistrate, Mrs. M. Tanimola, ruled that bail be granted the defendant in the sum of N100,000.

"Bail is granted the defendant in the sum of N100000 with two gainfully employed sureties. Sureties should be blood relatives of the defendant and evidence of their tax payment is to be verified. Case is adjourned till May 18 2013," she said.

Man's Left Arm To Be Cut Off For Stealing

A Bauchi Upper Shari'ah Court on Thursday upheld the judgment of a lower court, ordering that the left arm of Abdullahi Sale, be cut off for stealing.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that a lower Shari'ah Court in the area had convicted Sale of Zungur Kogi village in Bauchi Local Government Area, on charges of conspiracy and theft.

NAN further recalls that Sale had filed an appeal before the Upper Shari'ah Court, urging it to clear him of all the charges he was convicted with.

Delivering judgment on the appeal brought before it, the Judge, Malam Musa Barde, upheld the position of the lower court.

Barde said that based on the proceedings of the lower court, the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.

The prosecutor, Corporal Idris Malum, had told the court that the convict broke into the shops of Danladi Ya'u of Zungur Kogi and Yusuf Babba of Bula-Lusa of the same address.

Malum said that the convict carted away properties belonging to Ya'u and Bula-Lusa worth more than N13,000.

He said that the offence contravened Section 151 of the Shari'ah Penal Code. Sale pleaded for leniency, saying that he was a first time offender.

After The Post broke the story last year, Arty�s friends revealed that he had made the moves on the popular teacher as part of a $400 bet with classmates to see who could hook up with her first.

Yet fellow classmates said the duo also had an obvious romantic energy.

�The way they act together�When he walks into the room, her face lights up,��Maia Torruella, a sophomore, said at the time. �And when he�s gone, she�s boring. You can tell he�s still on her mind.�

Despite telling friends he had developed feelings for �Shorty,� Arty publicly insisted that the woman in the photo wasn�t Warning.

When questioned by city investigators, he also privately copped to kissing the teacher in Bleecker Playground � but insisted it had been a �one-time occurrence,� the investigative report says.

Arty got �uncooperative� after that and refused to say anything further.

Warning and her lawyer also met with investigators, but other than providing basic background information, she �declined to answer any questions about the matter,� the probe shows.

The Department of Education was able to dismiss the novice teacher with relative ease because she was untenured.

Warning was appointed a social studies teacher at Manhattan Theatre Lab HS only in October 2010 � and was earning less than $49,000 when she was canned.

The video showcases the killer combination being used to play a first-person shooter and the result is mind-blowing.
The user becomes fully immersed in the game, using Virtuix’s passive treadmill to move and a gun-like controller to fire on enemies. Then, the Oculus Rift adds an immersive virtual reality experience thanks to its dual head-mounted displays that provide a 110-degree viewing angle.
The experience offered by the Omni and Rift is something next-generation video game consoles like the PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s upcoming next-generation Xbox obviously can’t even come close to competing with out of the box. A head-mounted 3D virtual reality device coupled with an omnidirectional passive treadmill places the user inside the game. The gamer can walk, run, turn and look around as if he or she is inside the complex new world created by each video game.
The Oculus Rift, which began as a crowd-funded project on Kickstarter, is now available for preorder and Virtuix is currently preparing a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the Omni.

Boston bombing suspect, Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, on the run

  

26 year old Tamerlan and 19 year old Dzhokhar, a second-year medical student in the U.S, are suspected to be behind the Boston Marathon bombings which happened a few  days ago. Tamerlan was killed in a shootout with police last night, Dzhokhar is on the run.  Dzhokhar has been identified as a 'normal' 19-year-old medical student and described as 'good kid'.

Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev is considered by law enforcement to be armed and extremely dangerous. A social network post purportedly made by the terror suspect today said he 'would kill everyone because they killed his brother'.His father described him as a 'true angel' today as news emerged his two sons were terror suspects wanted for the atrocious attack on Boston on Monday.  He is such an intelligent boy. We expected him to come on holidays here.'

His 26-year-old older son Tamerlan Tsarnaev was killed in a shootout with police late last night.Tamerlan died in hospital with multiple gunshot wounds and possible blast injuries after a fierce gun battle late last night.
Both men were legal permanent residents of the United States who hailed from Chechnya, which has been plagued by an Islamic insurgency stemming from separatist wars.

Mariam explained to hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield she began growing facial hair 28 years ago, after the birth of her son.

She tried electrolysis three times, but the hair always grew back.
After years of using tweezers to disguise the growing goatee, Mariam gave up in August 2008.
“It was more curiosity, like what will happen with me if I let it grow,” she said. “Like how it will make me feel.”
Now Mariam only trims her beard for maintenance. She’s the “Bearded Lady” in a traveling circus and writes about her experiences on a blog.

A 28-YEAR-OLD man from Thungulula village in Filabusi has been sentenced to 48 months in jail after he sneaked into his 15-year-old sister's bedroom twice and fondled her bre*sts.

The man, who cannot be named to protect the victim's identity, pleaded not guilty to two counts of indecent assault when he appeared before Filabusi magistrate Mzingaye Moyo on Monday.

But the magistrate convicted him and sentenced him to an effective 48 months in jail.

Prosecutor Jethro Mada told the court that on March 28 at around 11pm, the man went to his sisters' bedroom when their parents, who are members of an apostolic sect, were attending a prayer meeting.

He found the girl and his other younger sister sleeping and sneaked into their blankets.

The man started fondling his sister's bre*sts and caressing her all over the body, which prompted her to wake up.

The girl tried to stop him, but he continued until she screamed. Her younger sister was woken up by the screams and the man fled.

On April 11, the man repeated the offence and the sisters told their parents about the abuse, leading his arrest.

The two girls testified against their brother with the abused girl revealing that he never allowed her to talk to other men.

"He was saying he wants to be my lover," the girl told the court.

Computer Village Generates $2bn Annually To Economy – Minister

 

The Computer Village in Ikeja, Lagos, generates about two billion dollars (N300 billion) to the economy annually, Mrs Omobola Johnson, Minister of Information and Communications Technology, has said.
Johnson disclosed this at the Monthly Breakfast Meeting of the Nigerian-South Africa Chamber of Commerce on Thursday in Lagos.
According to the minister, the revenues come mostly from the cloning of phones and the exploration all sorts of software applications.
“I think I am the first ICT minister that has taken time to visit the place and we have seen that the operators have great skills.
“The place consists of wonderful sets of youths who are generating employment for themselves, while inventing new ICT skills.
“We have encouraged the operators to come out with local brands to support the growth of the economy,” the minister said.
Johnson said that the ministry was working closely with the executives of the market association to ensure that the operators’ skills were harnessed to generate more revenues.
She said that the ministry had plans to ensure that 60 per cent of rural dwellers had access to personal computers and the Internet by 2015.
“We plan to empower the youths at the Computer Village to fulfill these targets and to create more jobs,” the minister said. (NAN)

Real Madrid have usurped Manchester United as the richest football club on the planet for the first time since Forbes magazine began their rankings in 2004.
The Red Devils have sat at the top of the list for nine years in a row but Jose Mourinho’s men are now worth $135 million more (€103m) at $3.3 billion (€2.429bn), while Sir Alex Ferguson’s side sit second in the business magazine’s most valuable club list.
Barcelona are perched comfortably in third – $565m (€434m) behind United but $1.274m (€978m) ahead of fourth-placed Arsenal – and rose 99 per cent in value over 12 months.
Bayern Munich fill out the top five having made the Champions League final last season as well as finishing second in the Bundesliga. Their value is sure to rise further in next year’s rankings with the added interest of Pep Guardiola as coach, not to mention their triumph in this season’s Bundesliga and a potential treble of trophies.
AC Milan are the top-placed Serie A side in sixth and the highest-placed club to be valued below the €1bn mark this year. However, they are also the only club in the top 10 which have gone down in value over the last 12 months.
Chelsea’s Champions League-winning season saw maintain their place in the list and boost their value by 18%, not so contrasting to the team below them, Juventus, who saw their value rise by 17% after returning to Scudetto-lifting ways in 2012.
Manchester City rose from 13th to 9th in Forbes’ list after winning the Premier League last season and qualifying for the Champions League for the second successive campaign.
An English team not faring as well are Liverpool, who were fourth in April 2008 but find themselves 10th five years later as they continue to suffer from not competing with the European elite.
Outside of the top 10 sit Europa League quarter-finalists Tottenham in 11th, Bundesliga side Schalke in 12th, Champions League semi-finalists Borussia Dortmund in 13th, Italian giants Inter in 14th and Olympique Lyonnais in 15th.
The final five in the list are South America’s sole entrants Corinthians in 16th, Walter Mazzarri’s Napoli in 17th, German side Hamburg in 18th, Olympique de Marseille (who dropped 18% in value, the biggest drop in the top 20) in 19th and Newcastle United perched 20th.
Interestingly, despite being considered one of the richest clubs in the world, Paris Saint-Germain fail to make the top 20, while La Liga’s top-three duo are the only Spanish sides to make the list.

F*L*A*S*H! Police informant, three others arrested for pipeline vandalism

  

An informant for the Inspector-General of Police’s Special Task Force on Anti-Pipeline Vandalism Unit, Ahmed Bashorun, has been arrested after being implicated in a case of pipeline vandalism.
Bahorun, who goes by the pseudonym, D1, allegedly hired the other suspects, Banjo Nofiu, Ogunleti Okanlawon, 32 and Nofiu Rasak to vandalise pipelines and siphon petrol while also giving the police information in order to clear him of all suspicions.
One of the suspects, Okonlawon, disclosed that he was working for D1.
The Oyo state-born panel beater said he used his bus to convey the product from the jetty to a junction from where the product was sold.
He said, “I work for D1. I use my bus to help them carry fuel. At the end of each trip, they pay me between N5, 000 and N6, 000. At times, I go once a week or twice. I take the products to Oke-Oko junction, from where they will sell to buses. I am not involved in the sales; I only convey them to the junction. But I stopped working since February.”
However, D1 described Okanlanwon’s claim as untrue, adding that he was truly an informant that had been set up by the vandals.
He said, “I help police to locate where vandals are. I am an informant. I chose to work for the police because I am close to them. But I was surprised when they arrested these guys and they mentioned my name.
Mr. Friday Ibadin, who is in charge of the task force, said the suspects engaged the police in an eight-hour gun battle, at Kadoko -Konu area of Ikorodu before their arrest.
He said at the end of the gun duel, it was discovered that the suspects built their houses close to the creeks from where they created routes through which they conveyed stolen petroleum products from Arepo.
He said, “On Sunday, we learnt that about 80 vandals were shooting at Kadoko Konu area of Ikorodu. We stormed there at midnight, where we exchange fire with them. But considering government’s property and in order to prevent any fire outage, we stopped shooting at about 8am. But they continued firing until about 10am. When they did not see any response from us, I believe they continued to siphon fuel.
“We allowed them do their work inside the creeks while we cordoned off the entire exit points. Later, we picked up three of them and during interrogation; one of them mentioned the fourth person whom he identified as D1”
He said after the shoot-out, the police recovered 2000 litres of petrol, canoe paddlers and a generator. – Source: Punch

A suspected armed robbery kingpin whose gang allegedly killed four policemen in an operation recently has explained why they were able to perform the feat. Oluwole, a.k.a Omoba told Crime Watch at the police headquarters, Ikeja, Lagos, “we always have enough arms and ammunition.
We were always armed to the teeth. You see, the police have limited arms and ammunition that they carry about but for us, we always have more than enough.” According to Omoba, he started armed robbery five years ago and his gang had been successful except recently when they stormed Victoria Garden City (VGC) and met unusual resistance from the police. “I think, we had been very successful for the past five years.
We had robbed in many Southern states until the recent robbery at VGC where two of our members were killed. It was on March 24, the police opened fire on us. The gunshots were from back, front and the two sides. I managed to escaped but Paul and AY were killed. “It was not like that in other states.
When we fire back at police, they used to run for their lives, but these Lagos policemen were shooting and shooting that I asked my men to shoot their ways out. I was shocked with the kind of shooting I experienced that day. “In fact, since the encounter with the police, I have not gone for any robbery operation. I am still in shock, I wonder why the police were still trailing me,” he said. On why he chosed Ajah and Lekki axis for operations, he said, “I think you know that people don’t keep money at home as they used to do.
If we operate in places like Agege, Ejigbo and Ketu, how much can we find in a home? “But, in Lekki, VGC and part of Ajah, we have rich men that still keep reasonable amount of money in their homes. My brother, we have to use our brain to work.” Parading Omoba and three other members of his gang, the state Commissioner of Police Umar Manko said that on April 11, 2013, during a follow up to the robbery operation at VGC, the officer in charge of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) Abba Kyari and his team arrested two armed robbery suspects. He said Alpha Uche who was shot dead during encounter with police and one Ibrahim Akanbi confessed.
According to Manko, the suspects interrogated led the police to arrest their Armourer, Kazeem Adebola at Ayobo. He said the police recovered five AK 47 rifles, 31 AK 47 magazine loaded with 30 rounds of live ammunition and a Honda Civic Coupe with registration number FST 592 BC. He said inside the recovered vehicle were AK 47 and ammunitions concealed in a specially constructed compartment. Manko said the gang was responsible for many armed robbery operations in the Southwest. He warned criminals especially, armed robbers to leave the state or risked the wrath of the police. “Whether the criminals operate in another state and run to Lagos, we don’t want it, as we will fish them out, he declared.

Jealous Woman Drugs Husband, Cuts Off Pen*s

 


A US woman cut off her husband’s penis because she “wanted him to stop hurting her” with it, and was enraged that she thought he had another woman, her lawyer said Wednesday.
Catherine Kieu Becker planted audio devices to try to catch him having sex with a lover, but they failed to find any evidence — although the bugs did record the night she “took away his manhood,” tossing it into the garbage.
Kieu, 50, is accused of drugging her estranged 60-year-old husband’s dinner then tying him to a bed and cutting off his penis, at their home in Garden Grove, southeast of Los Angeles, in 2011.
“This is a case about a husband wanting to seek a divorce from his wife and her unwillingness to accept it,” prosecutor John Christl said at the start of her trial. “By refusing to accept it, she committed a vicious act.
“She took away his manhood,” he said, calling Kieu a “very controlling, manipulative woman… who knew exactly what she was doing.”
The prosecutor said audio bugs recorded the events of July 11, 2011, when she mixed the insomnia drug Zolpidem into a bowl of tofu soup.
“You can hear him saying, ‘Oh, it’s good’,” Christl said. “You can also hear him saying, ‘It’s a little salty’,” before going to bed early, at about 8:10 pm. When he was asleep she used ropes to tie him to the bed.
When he woke, she told him “You deserve it” three times, and then “slices off his penis with one motion of the knife,” Christl said. “She then walks into the kitchen, takes the severed penis and puts it in the garbage disposal.”
Her lawyer Frank Bittar said Kieu had suffered a “lifetime of trauma” beginning with her childhood in civil war-torn Vietnam, and including being raped by an older brother repeatedly when she was six years old.
After moving to California she got married for a first time in 1984, but agreed to an “amicable” divorce in 1997.
“She’s not jealous and she’s not wicked and she’s not a black widow,” Bittar insisted.
She married her second husband — whose identity has not been revealed — in December 2009. He was “hyper-sexual,” using erectile dysfunction drugs and forcing her into “painful” sexual positions, the attorney said.
“You’re going to learn that in Catherine’s mind, she severed his penis because she wanted him to stop hurting her with his penis,” he said in his trial opening statement.
If convicted, Kieu faces up to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
