The popular Funke Akindele is a talented Yoruba movie actress who rose to fame in I Need To Know, a TV series that enlightened youths about HIV/AIDS. However, the Nollywood star cemented her stardom in the Nigerian film industry with her amazing performance in her rib cracking movie ‘Jenifa’.

This movie cuts across all social groups with the street parlance in it becoming the mode of communication at social gatherings. Many folks now says ‘Yelz’ instead of Yes, ‘Big Gehs’ instead of Big Girls, ‘Parry’ instead of Party, etc.

So far, Funke has earned over 56 Million Naira, netting about 20 Million Naira in 2012 alone.

Chris Brown was paid $1 million for Lagos Concert

Popular singer Chris Brown was paid at least $1m (about N156m) to travel down to Lagos with a 15 man crew last week, NET investigations have revealed.

The Grammy-winning singer stopped over in South Africa, for concerts in Cape Town and Jo’burg, before heading down to Lagos for the show.

The Lagos event, built into Brown’s on-going world tour, was organised by Kilimanjaro Events – same company that promoted Rick Ross and Anita Baker in the past.

Financial details were not made public, but we found that Oando boss Wale Tinubu was a major financier, as well as Etisalat, which provided last minute sponsorship.

Brown was to make a brief appearance at the Oando end-of-year gig, but we’re told that did not happen.

It was Brown’s second time in Nigeria, the first being for a THISDAY Music Festival performance a few years ago.

Sources told us the fees ‘could have been more’ if he was required to perform with a live band or if he had to do multiple venues or cities.

Although he performed with a DJ and backing track, with two back-up singers and four dancers, he gave a good account of himself, treating fans to almost two hours of a well-planned set that left guests asking for more.
Chris Brown’s tour will continue early next year with a scheduled performance in Cote D’Ivoire.

Mario Baloteli's Younger Brother Arrested For Assulting Two Police Men

Manchester City star Mario Balotelli’s brother appeared in an Italian court on Christmas Eve accused of assaulting two policemen.

Enoch Barwuah, 20, who had trials with Stoke City and Sunderland before signing for Salford City last month, was held after a brawl at a bar and kept in custody until his appearance before a judge.

The court heard how he had been attacked as he drank in a bar in Brescia with his sister Abigail by a man who ripped his shirt but Barwuah then turned on police who had been called by the owner.

Officers said they found him in the street shirtlessand barefooted and when they approached they were kicked and punched, while their squad car was also damaged in the incident.

The court bailed Barwuah to his home address in Brescia until January 3, when he will have a fast track trial accused of a assault and resisting arrest. At his hearing he apologised and said his reactions had been ‘unjustified’ but he had become concerned after his sister ‘felt ill’ during the attack.

Barwuah is Balotelli’s younger brother and apart from Abigail he also has a sister Angel – they remained with his natural parents while he was adopted as a baby by a wealthy Italian couple.

The 10 hottest Nigerian rappers of 2012

There was a sharp decline in the release of Hip-Hop materials in 2012, notwithstanding, a handful of rappers managed to do us proud.
Here is our top 10 list for the hottest rappers in Nigeria of 2012….

10. PHYNO : The Igbo-speaking rapper proved his worth in 2012 releasing the duet ‘Ghost mode’ with Olamide, bagging three nominations at The Headies, and then collaborating with Illbliss on ‘Amanchi Kwanu’.

9. D’PRINCE : The MAVIN act started this year with controversies over his actual record deal with former label Mo’Hits but bounced back with yet another banger ‘Take banana’ off the MAVIN compilation ‘Solar Plexus’. He finally released his debut ‘FRENZY!’ featuring the likes of M.I, Wizkid and others.

8 . MODENINE : Nigel Benn didn’t drop his long awaited album in 2012 due to record label issues but turned it up with two mixtapes ‘Occupy The Throne’ and ‘Alphabetical Order’ with XYZ. He was one of the judges at the ‘Nokia Don’t Break the Beat’ rap competition which led to his verbal face-off with female rapper Muna that put him onthe headlines for weeks before they eventually squashed it an Industry Nite gig.

7 . ILLBLISS : The ‘Ibo Boy’ finally returned with his A-game in 2012 after a subtle absence. Although he spent most of the year grooming R&B singer Chidinma who is currently under his Gorettilabel, he released his ‘Oga Boss’ album with the hits ‘Anamachi Kwanu’ feat Phyno and Heartbeatsfeat Banky W.

6. NAETO C : Mr Super C kept it pushing this year, the most remarkable thing was signing on as a Hennessey Artistry headliner along with M.I. He also released his ‘Tony Montana’ single and remix with a big budget video featuring D’banj. Away from music a bit; he tied the knot with his beau Nicole at a high society wedding.

5. REMINISCE : In 2012, Mr Remilekun Safaru finally got the respect he’s been clamouring for by working hard on his skills and street image. Being one of the two Yoruba-lingo rappers to dominate this year, Remi pulled stunts with the release of his debut ‘Book of Rap Stories’ which brought the street anthems ‘Kako bi chicken’ and ‘2musssh’. He dedicated two weeks throwing jabs at another rapper Vector and spent the latter part of the year performing outside the country.

4. M.I : Jude Abaga takes fourth spot for releasing the ‘dopest’ mixtape of the year ‘Illegal Music 2’ which he launched on his website MIABAGA.comand renewing his contract as VP at his label Chocolate City in April (dispelling rumourshe was leaving the label, following the launch of his Loopy Music label). He also was the the Hennessy Artistry co-headliner alongside Naeto C…

3. OLAMIDE : The Yoruba-speaking lyricist took the world by storm, returning with a powerful sophomore, what we might call the rap album of the year. Olamide’s’ ‘YBNL’ which produced the singles ‘Voice of the Streets’ and ‘First of all’ was released in the latter part of 2012 and showed a lot of improvement lyrically. He parted way with CODED Tunes and launched his own label YBNL Nation working with Tony Nwankolo as his manager.

2. VECTOR : V.E.C was quite busy all year – performing, recording or touring. He won two awards each at the Nigerian Entertainment Awards as well as the coveted ‘Lyricist on the roll’ at The Headies. In 2012, he also recorded and released a song and video with Jamaican dancehall singer Mavado. He has also recorded with rapper DMX. He released his ‘Bar Racks’ mixtape only to drop the album’ The Second Coming’ in December.

1. ICE PRINCE : If the rap game was a marathon race, in 2012 Panshak Zamani left his colleagues behind by kilometres. The rapper clearly made themost money this year, performing back-to-back in and out of the country – the after effect of hisdebut ‘Everybody Loves Ice Prince’. When NET broke the news about the Choc City act’s baby, he initially denied, but he’s since confirmed the baby’s his accepted responsibility. He ended the year pretty well by co- hosting the Chanel O Awards after releasing two new singles ‘Aboki’ and ‘More’.
ROOKIE OF THE YEAR : That title goes to upcoming rapper Boogey who only in 2012 featured on Modenine, M.I and Terry tha Rapman’s mixtapes. He successfully released his mixtape ‘ Artificial Intelligence ’ and reportedly signed a deal before calling 2012 wrap.

Rafael Benitez hails team after sensational win over Aston Villa

The Blues boss was delighted with his side’s 8-0 victory on Sunday – and also confirmed the Daniel Sturridge has been undergoing a medical ahead of£12 million switch to Liverpool.

Chelsea manager Rafael Benitez hailed his side’s improvement after a scintillating 8-0 home win over Aston Villa on Sunday.

The Blues blew away Paul Lambert’s men to move into third place in the Premier League – and Benitez refused to rule out a title challenge despite his team sitting 12 points behind leaders Manchester United with a game in hand.

“You can see the team improving,” Benitez told reporters. “With this type of performance, we willtry to be as close as possible [to the title].

“To win is always special but the main thing is to see the team progressing and improving. Every training session we adjust little things and you can see the team growing.

“The players were really focused from day one. They have been trying to learn and improve. I think you can see the team is really concentrated, with belief and confidence in themselves.

“Now we have to sustain this run, keep winning games and then it will be easier for me to send the message across that we can compete.”

Benitez, who was appointed interim boss in November, also reserved praise for Fernando Torres after the Spaniard scored his 13th goal ofthe season to open the scoring with a superb third-minute header.

“As a striker, he needed to score goals,” he added.“The team is doing well, he has more chances and confidence because he is scoring goals.”

Meanwhile, Benitez confirmed that Daniel Sturridge has been at Liverpool undergoing a medical ahead of his proposed £12 million transferto the Merseyside club in January.

Benitez said: “The information I had was that he was there [at Liverpool] having the medical. I don’t have any more information because I have been focusing on the game, so we will let you know. I think he’s a good player, he has all the talent.”

Photo: Man Excretes 90 Wraps Of Cocaine In 2 Weeks

A suspected drug trafficker recently excreted 90 wraps of a substance believed to be cocaine in 14 days.

The suspect, Peter Onyeagba, 40, allegedly tested positive for drug ingestion after his arrest at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos during an inward screening of passengers on a Kenyan Airways flight. He was arrested by officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

NDLEA Airport Commander, Hamza Umar, confirmed the arrest. He said, “Onyeagba is the longest observed drug suspect since January 2012. He began excretion the day he was arrested and took two weeks to complete observation. Some others concludethe evacuation of ingested drugs in three days, while a majority last for a week. This isthe longest observed case since January.”

Onyeagba, who sells building materials for a living, is a resident of Lome, Togo. After travelling to Brazil on Nov. 15, 2012 through Ghana, Onyeagba reportedly spent two weeks in Brazil before his return to Nigeria.

Ingested drugs, according to the agency, could last for a few weeks with minimal effects on a courier if the pellets of drugs remain sealed. It could however kill in a few minutes if there is a leakage.

Onyegaba told CRIME DIGEST that he was avictim of greed. He said, “I have been selling building materials in Togo for over 10 years. I was on a business trip to Brazil with $8,000 and had planned on visiting Nigeria. Some of my friends that we usually meet in a drinking bar introduced me into drugs.

“They told me that instead of going back to Nigeria with nothing, that I should take somedrugs and earn $3,000. I was not forced to smuggle the drug; I only decided to give it a try after much persuasion. I was interested in making an additional $3,000.”

The Chairman/Chief Executive of the NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade, reiterated the agency’s decision to continue the fight against drug traffickers.
He said, “One of our strategies is to be vigilant and ensure that any suspectcaught is duly prosecuted to deter others. Most suspects are just lured by greed.”
