A FACTION of the Junior Member of Parliament in Zimbabwe is calling for the introduction of contraceptives, especially con doms in all schools to fight against the spread of HIV and AIDS amongst school children.
Speaking at the commemoration of the World AIDS day recently, the Provincial Speaker of Junior Parliament, Ashley Zvavabjanja said the availability of con doms in the schools will eradicate the widespread of HIV and AIDS in young people.
“I would stand with the distribution of contraceptives in school toilets, especially con doms, because honestly speaking from statistics, there are a lot of teenage pregnancies and abortions recorded out there which is evident enough to show that school children are having se x, so to protect them in their practice,it’s much better for them to be given contraceptives,” she said.
The Junior Member of Parliament of Chivhange Constituency, Simbarashe Jeri also passed the same sentiments, saying that students were starting to indulge in sex at a tender age.
“l am of the view that due to this AIDS pandemic, condoms should be provided at schools because some of the students are even having unprotected s ex, whilst they are still very young, therefore, action should be taken towards this issue,” he said.
However, some of the Junior Members of Parliament opposed the idea, saying students were supposed to be encouraged to abstain from se x.
“Con doms should not be put in schools and what we should work towards is encouraging abstinence and not exposing children on the fearless use of con doms,” said Angela Muleya, who is the Junior Minister of Home Affairs.
