Man, 50, remanded for raping minor

50-year-old Tajudeen Omole, has been arraigned before an Osogbo Magistrate’s Court over an alleged rape of a 12-year-old girl.

According to a report, the accused man went to the house of his victim on November 27, 2013 at 1, Ikolaba, Osogbo, Osun State and cunningly lured the girl into her room, where he defiled her.

The Police were alerted when the victim reported the incident to people around, and the suspect was arrested.

Inspector Solomon Oladele, Police prosecutor, told the court that the offence committed was punishable under section 218 of the criminal code cap 34 vol II laws of Osun State Nigeria, 2003.

Counsel to the accused, Mr. Okobe Nagite, applied for the bail but was refused by the presiding magistrate Mr. Olusola Aluko, who said  counsel to the accused is to file a formal application for his bail.

Nagite ruled that the accused be remanded in Ilesha prison.

"How I Was Almost Raped By A Prominent Nigerian 'Chief'" - A Man Shares His Story (PHOTO)

After writing countless number of application letters and sitting for some tests in 1995, I was directed to the office of a prominent Nigerian for a job.

As the door closed behind me, I noticed that it was an electric door, because the man controlled it with a button on his large desk.

Greetings over, I sat down and stated my mission. He looked at my result, commended it profusely, and promised to fix me up. A ray of hope glimmered in my heart. A job was finally in the horizon, I told myself. Then the music changed. His tone changed and he became chatty and chummy. He began to pry into my private life, asking about my girlfriend. I was uncomfortable. Seeing that I was not forth-coming with details, he reeled out a chain of stories of his sexual escapes with girls. I was no longer at ease. My discomfort mounted. But I tried to relax. Soon after, things fell apart: he stripped and asked me to strip so he could see my manhood. My jaw dropped. I knew that this handshake had gone beyond the elbow. Time to leave, I told myself. But how would I do it without annoying this Big Man, especially one that had promised to fix me up with a job? I chose to bide my time.

He went on with other overtures and demands, cajoling me and making other promises, but I continued to ask him with all the respect I could muster to stop it. Sensing that his words were not effective, he brought out some pornographic magazines from his drawer and dropped them on the table before me, opened. I stood up and told him that I wanted to leave.

I was not sure how he would react, but a few things made me certain that he would be circumspect with me. First was that I could hear the voices of his staff in the outer office. He would not want me to shout, even though I was convinced his staff knew what their boss did behind closed doors. Secondly, he was a person who had held a federal appointment, and would not want a scandal, and I had made up my mind to see Chief Gani Fawehinmi if the man had used force on me. Thirdly, he was a member of the elite group of his noble profession, and he would not like his image tarnished.

He pretended to have been hurt and wondered why I could not do such “a simple thing” for “Chief” who had been so nice to me and had promised to do other special things for me. I thanked him for his kindness and asked him to open the door. I knew that my CV and credentials that I left with him would be shredded once I walked out of the door.

However, the first time I encountered sexual harassment was in boarding school. I heard of homosexuality in school but never witnessed it until a Chapel Prefect, who “liked me so much,” tried it on me. Some public holidays fell on the two days before the weekend and many students travelled out of the hostels. He was the only prefect in the prefect’s cubicle, and asked me to join him and keep me company that night. I suspected nothing when he locked the door, which opened into hall where other students were. We chatted for a long time. Then he moved over to my bed so we could talk quietly, as it was late. I was surprised when he began to touch me strangely. Since he was a senior and a prefect, I took his hands off with respect. I noticed that he was sexually aroused. Then he came back with more force and persistence.

I pushed him off, rose from the bed without a word, opened the door and went to my bed. I thought that was the end of the story. No. The next day, for some flimsy reason, he unleashed some strokes of the cane on me and then completed the thrashing with his hands. He was like an enraged bull. Nobody would ever imagine that it was the same Azuka he “liked” so much that he was beating like a criminal. Ours was a school where the prefects were feared more than the teachers. That was the end of our friendship.

On November 25, the world marked another International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. If as a man growing up in a country where homosexuality is publicly condemned I was sexually harassed, how does a woman fare in this nation? Right from birth, the girl child is vulnerable. She is the constant target of paedophiles: uncles, cousins, domestic servants, teachers, instructors, neighbours, religious guides.

As she becomes a teenager, there are amorous advances from classmates, teachers and other adults. If she rejects such advances, she is beaten up most times. Sometimes, she is lured into a lonely place by someone she trusts and is gang-raped. She may even be killed after the rape. If she is unfortunate to be an orphan or from a poor home, even the man under whose roof she lives may end up using her as his sex tool even while she is as young as 14 years. If she says no, she is thrown out.

When she gets into the university, she is faced with an assault from male students, including violent members of different university cults, as well as lecturers. If she does not accept to be sexually exploited by the lecturer, she may be failed. If she is an intelligent student, the lecturer would give her the lowest grade of pass, to dent her overall result.

Then when she is out of the university in search of jobs, her fate becomes like that of a lamb thrown into a jungle filled with wolves. Many men would demand sex to give her a job, even when she is qualified for the job. Even when she gets the job, her bosses would constantly sexually harass her. And when she rises by a dint of diligence and performance, she is accused of using “bottom power.” If she wants to act in a movie, producers and directors demand sex. If she wants to be a model, the modelling agent demands sex. If she wants to go into politics, godfathers demand sex.

In her relationships, if she falls out with a man, the man bathes her with acid or gets her beaten up or even raped. When she is married, most  disagreements with her husband end up in a beating. The excuse is that her mouth runs like a typewriter. But then you ask the men that give such excuses for beating their wives if they beat their female bosses when such female bosses unleash the venom in their tongue on them? Don’t they usually take the venom from their bosses silently? If they can take the venom of their female bosses quietly, why not also take the venom from their wives and use other means to get back at the wife, if they must?

But it does not end there: If her husband dies in his prime, even through an auto crash, she is accused of killing him. She may get thrown out of her home without a kobo by greedy in-laws. If she is lucky to have a husband who wrote a will or included his wife’s name in his property, she may be lucky not to lose everything. If she is blessed with longevity, she is termed a witch, especially if some of her children have died before her. She is accused of renewing her life with the blood of her children.

Any time a lady walks into my office in search of a job, I remember the ordeal I went through in the office of that Big Man. Harming or sexually exploiting a woman is cowardice, not bravery. What if it were your daughter, sister or mother?

Anambra State PDP chairman kidnapped

The Chairman of PDP in Anambra State, Prince Kenneth Emeakayi, was kidnapped today Monday Dec. 2nd by unknown gunmen who abducted him up as he was returning to Awka, the State capital.

Prince Emeakayi was said to be returning from his village in Okija when his car was intercepted at a junction in Nri and was taken away by the gunmen. He hasn't been heard from since and the kidnappers are yet to contact his family.

BOMBSHELL: “Pres. Jonathan Can’t Win In 2015″ – Dokubo Asari

One of the biggest supporters and kinsman of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, has declared that the president has lost the support of his political base, the South-south and the South-East owing to the failure of his government to deliver on its promises.

Dokubo-Asari, at a press conference in Abuja on Friday, said that it would be tough for Jonathan to win the presidential election in 2015 if he decides to run based on the poor showing of his administration.

He said that his decision to speak out was for him and others who are ardent supporters of Jonathan not to be blamed for his failure in 2015.

He said: “I want to start with an Ijaw proverb, which says: the eyes watched its seven children to death. Instead of advising them, it was just looking at them until they died, while the mouth talked its only child to life and success.

“We have continued as Ijaw people and the entire Niger Delta and South-South to support the presidency of President Goodluck Jonathan, but a time has come when silence cannot be golden.

“We mainly speak out in issues that are very critical to the survival of our people, the survival of the people of the South-South and the South-East, which happens to be the political base of Goodluck Jonathan.

“Jonathan is surrounded by very greedy people who are only in the Presidency to enrich themselves at the expense of Goodluck himself.

“This brings us to another Kalabari proverb, which says: where there are elders, a goat cannot be allowed to deliver tied to a stick.

“If we don’t talk and we continue to brush it aside, tomorrow we will be blamed and people will say: Mujahid Dokubo-Asari was around when Goodlcuk Jonathan was president and he didn’t talk.

“Them I will be an accomplice and accessory after the fact….

“It is alarming because the South-South must have its uninterrupted eight years tenure, which is constitutional.

“But with how things are going under Jonathan’s watch, we are afraid that we may not be able to have our eight years tenure because there will be no magic about it if it is going to be one man one vote.”

Dokubo-Asari said he will continue to speak out despite the fact that he had benefitted from Jonathan, adding that one of those causing trouble for the President remains the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Chief Godsday Orubebe.

He said: “I have benefited immensely from Goodluck Jonathan with my stake but benefit alone is not enough to make me to keep quiet when the period is very challenging for our people.

“So, some of us are tempted to ask this question: why are all these things happening?

“Why has the President allow some ministers like Godsday Orubebe to continue in government?

“Everyday people die on the East-West Road.

“If Orubebe is incompetent as he has shown himself to be, he should be removed.

“Nobody voted for Orubebe.

“And why is Orubebe so important to the President that he can’t remove him even in the face of his obvious incompetence and several allegation to corruption?

“We feel very ashamed and embarrassed.

“Orubebe was one of us.

“He was attending meetings with us, sleeping in the ground with us, entering night bus with us and we nominated him to be appointed a minister.

“We have gone to him and complained to him that we don’t like they way things are going in his ministry and told him that if the President leaves in 2015 without the completion of the East-West Road, we are finished.

“And the man keeps telling us there is no money.

“When IBB (former military President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida) was there, there was money.

“When Abacha was there, there was money.

“When others were there, there was money.

“How come the money disappeared when Jonathan got there?

“Jonathan and orubebe will account for the death in the East-West Road.”

On the face-off between Jonathan and former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Dokubo-Asari said there was no need for it.

He said that no matter what Jonathan feels, he still remains a beneficiary of Obasanjo’s large heartedness.

He said: “First, there was no need for Goodluck Jonathan to disagree with Olusegun Obasanjo.

“I don’t like Obasanjo.

“I don’t like his face.

“I hate him.

“But he was instrumental in bringing Goodluck Jonathan to power.

“And the greedy people around Jonathan have not managed him enough to the extent that the President and people around him will allow Jonathan to disagree with Obasanjo openly

“And if you check, all the people who supported Goodluck Jonathan and fought to bring him to power, have openly disagreed with him.

“What was the cause of these disagreements?

“These are the questions we want to put to the president.

“Some people say Obasanjo is manipulating Goodluck Jonathan, that is why Jonathan is disagreeing with him and we ask: what has Goodluck Jonathan’s government achieved to show that it is a departure from other governments that have existed since 1956?

“For us, nothing has changed.

“It is still business as usual.

“So what are the advice that Obasanjo gave to Jonathan that were so difficult for him to fulfill, that made him decide to fall out with Obasanjo?

“Obasanjo was instrumental and manipulated the process that illegally removed Diepreye Alamieyeseigha as governor of Bayelsa State and installed Jonathan as governor, made him vice president, fought for him to become acting president and also fought for him to become president of Nigeria.

“Apart from Obasanjo, there are so many people who supported Goodluck Jonathan, some have been pushed out by those who were not there to give him any support, while some others are trapped and they cannot talk.

I have a feeling that Fulani man Buhari would have done more for Niger-delta than Jonathan has done so far Jonathan has done nothing for Niger Delta actually. It is getting more and more difficult to support him, the second niger bridge is another issue. Even his allies are denouncing him. What a shame!

Pregnant mother, man die in community clash!

A pregnant mother, Mrs. Esther Effiong, and an indigene of Effiat, Mr. Bassey Okon, were on Friday, killed in a renewed clash among Effiat communities in Mbo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State.

Esther, a mother of two, was said to have led one of her children outside to urinate when she was shot twice by warring Effiat youths, who also set her corpse ablaze.

A younger brother to Esther, Mr. Edet Effiong, told our correspondent in Orukim on Saturday that Esther’s remains had been brought back from Effiat to Offi Uda, where she was to be buried.

Edet said that his sister was five months pregnant at the time of her death.

He said, “My sister was living with her husband in Inua Abasi, one of the Effiat’s communities, where she was killed.

“The hoodlums set her corpse ablaze after they had shot her to death. They also set her home ablaze. But nothing happened to her husband as the man had left that morning for work.”

The second victim, Okon, was said to be in his house, where the hoodlums inflicted machete cuts on him before setting him and his house on fire.

An indigene of Effiat, Mr. Uko Edet, said Effiat communities were not going to know peace until all those who were sitting on the communities’ oil revenues were brought to book.

“It is unfortunate that innocent people were killed in the fracas, but we will not yield to any pressures from any quarters to stop fighting.

 “There are thousands of Effiat’s youths that are hungry. Many of these youths are graduates without jobs.

“We shall reduce the entire Effiat land to rubble if those involved in stealing Effiat’s money refused to listen to our requests,” he said.

By Sunday morning, fighting and burning of houses had spread to Ute Esuk Enwang as thick smoke could be seen.

Residents and indigenes of Ute Esuk Enwang, Inua Abasi and some other Effiat communities, were seen fleeing to other Mbo villages.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Etim Dickson, who confirmed the incident, said the police needed help to be able to curb the activities of the hoodlums.

He stated that the police required gunboats stationed in many strategic positions to be able to arrest the situation.

Dickson said, “We need help, from the local government chairman, from the state government and the Federal Government. We need gunboats and regular fuel supply. These areas are not friendly as they are miles apart from land by water.”

FUTO Resumes On December 9th!!

The Senate of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri at its 375^th Extraordinary meeting held on Monday, December 2, 2013 considered the directive of the Federal Government on resumption of duty by Academic Staff in Federal Universities and decided that academic activities in the University should resume immediately for the conclusion of the 2012/2013 Rain Semester.

 

Consequently all students of the University are required to return to campus between Monday December 2, and Friday December 8, 2013 while Rain Semester Examinations commence on Monday December 9, 2013 and end on Saturday December 21, 2013.

 

Accordingly, all academic staff are required to proceed immediately to their respective Departments to sign in for resumption of duty not later than Wednesday December 4, 2013.

WATCH OUT: Advanced computer virus which can steal money from any bank account in any country!

A team of Russian cybercriminals have created a computer virus so sophisticated it can steal the money from any bank account in any country.Called the Neverquest Trojan, it lies hidden on malicious websites or infected computers and can steal the usernames and passwords for people’s online banking accounts.

Once it has access to these accounts it can empty them completely and is so advanced, security experts are warning that traditional antivirus software isn't enough to keep users protected.This is because the Trojan has been designed to contain ‘just about every possible trick’ known to hackers to avoid being caught and disabled

According to security firm Kaspersky Lab, Neverquest has already made ‘several thousand attempts’ to infect computers and is targeting some of the world’s biggest banks and investment companies.

A total of 28 major websites are under threat and Fidelity Investments is the main target

Once a computer is infected, Neverquest can record the usernames and passwords to online bank accounts and this information is then sent to anonymous hackers who can then use these to details to gain access to the accounts

After gaining access to a user’s account, cybercriminals make transactions and transfer money from the user to their own accounts or - to keep the trail from leading directly to them - to the accounts of other victims.

Kaspersky Lab also said that protection against threats such as Neverquest requires more than ‘just standard antivirus’ and advises customers to be extra vigilant to make sure they only access official sites and don’t store passwords in cookies, or on their computers. Browsers should be kept up to date, too.

ASUU Strike: ESUT Resumes Work!!

Students and teaching staff of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) on Monday returned to school following a directive by the school authorities.
Reportedly the authority directed them to end their 5-month-old strike and resume classes on Dec. 2 and start preparing for the 2012/2013 second semester examination.

According to the NAN journalist, who monitored the situation at the Enugu and Agbani campuses of the university, the students were in their departments exchanging pleasantries and checking the notice boards.

At the faculties of engineering and management sciences in the Enugu campus, students in their numbers were copying the second semester examination timetables pasted on the notice boards.

At the same time the lecturers held a meeting with the governing council of the university at the Agbani campus on the resumption of work.

The Chairman of the council, Chief Chilo Offiah, addressing the lecturers, thanked them for returning to work and promised to do everything possible to improve their welfare.

The executive members of the ESUT branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which called the strike, did not attended the meeting.
However the situation was not similar at the Enugu campus of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka: only a few students and lecturers were on campus.

NAN reports that the few lecturers were in their various offices discussing or reading while the non academic staff members were busy working.

Some of the lecturers, who preferred to remain anonymous, said they were waiting for directives from both the school authorities and the ASUU branch.

"We heard on the radio that we should resume classes but we have not received any circular to that effect,"some of them said.

DIRE ACCIDENT: Bride And 7 Others Die In Auto Crash, Kano

A bride and 7 members of her entourage tragically died as the bride was being conveyed to her husband’s home in Azare, Bauchi south, in a Honda Civic that crashed into moving tanker.

According to the eyewitness, the accident occurred Friday night, in Gaya, 65 kilometers from Southern Kano; the driver lost control at a diversion point and crashed into the tanker.

The witness said that the crash had occurred around 7.05 pm local time and by the time they had arrived they were "confronted with lifeless bodies of 7 females and a male."

The eyewitness also revealed that the police in Gaya conveyed the bodies to Gaya General Hospital.

The journalists report that the tragedy triggered traffic gridlock on the highways as commuters were forced to halt their journey due to pressure on the road by sympathizers who joined law enforcement agents in the recovery operation.

The case was officially confirmed by the Federal Road Safety Command, Kano, Malam Muhammad Garba.
