PHOTOS: Tiger Attacks 19-Year-Old Girl

A British student has been left with permanent scarring after a one-hundred-and-eighty kilogram tiger attacked her at an animal sanctuary in Thailand.

Human Sciences university student Isabelle Brennan, 19, and her sister Georgie, 21, had only been traveling for a week when the attack took place at Tiger Temple sanctuary in Thailand's west.
"We were given a talk beforehand and told not to touch the tiger’s head and to remove dangly jewellery," Brennan told the UK's The Daily Mail.
"We were then shown how to wash a tiger’s back."
It was while Isabelle was petting and washing a tiger that the animal turned it's head and mauled her, pushing her to the ground and biting through her thigh.
"Everything happened so fast," Brennan said.
"One minute I was petting a tiger’s back, the next it turned its head and knocked me to the ground with its paw."
Keepers at the animal sanctuary were quick to act, jumping between Brennan and the animal as elder sister Georgie dragged her away.
"As it lunged with its teeth I felt an agonising pain on the inside of my left thigh above my knee.
"When I looked down at my leg it was terrifying. All I could see was blood," she continued.
Two friends traveling with the girls quickly tied a tourniquet around Isabelle's leg to stop the bleeding.
She was taken to a local hospital where 'tens of stitched' were required to repair the large leg wound.
Isabelle also contracted an infection and high fever, keeping her in hospital in Thailand for more than two weeks.
"The Tiger Temple staff were very upset. They paid for all my treatment in hospital and visited every day."
"They explained the tiger was just being playful," she told the paper.
"However, I want to warn others going to Tiger Temple that the animals might not be as docile as they first appear."
Upon her return to the UK, Brennan was wheelchair bound and had to re-learn how to walk unassisted.
"I was nervous about going into the Temple,’ Brennan said.
"However, I was reassured by the staff that as the tigers had been hand-reared, they were so used to humans they were completely tame.
"They were also tethered by chains and the staff told me no-one had ever been seriously injured."
"In hindsight I had an incredibly lucky escape. I could have lost my leg or worse."
The animal park where the attack took place is one of only a few in the world where tourists can get up-close-and-personal with the animals.
The tigers are reportedly hand-reared by Buddhist monks in the area.

Man Dies After Raping Another Man's Wife

A man, Oderinde Joel and his wife are currently in police net after a Fulani herdsman, Aliu Abdulahi was shot to death by Joel for allegedly raping his wife on Saturday, August 24.

One Abdulahi Audu, who resides at Okaka village, Sawo, Iseyin, in Oke ogun area of Oyo State, was said to have reported at Iseyin police station on Sunday, August 25, that one of his workers, Abdulahi, who was helping him to rear his cows was killed by Joel.
It was gathered that the Divisional Police Officer sent detectives to the scene and the body of the deceased was moved to General Hospital, Iseyin, for autopsy, while the dane gun used in killing the herdsman was also recovered.
The suspect was reported to have admitted shooting the deceased when his wife raised the alarm on the farm that the deceased accosted her and forcefully raped her.
Crime Reports learnt that the pellets of the gun penetrated the deceased from the back, which was an indication that he was trying to run away from the suspect.
Confirming the story, the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olabisi Ilobanafor, said the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Iyaganku, for further investigation.

Man Rapes 5-Year-Old Girl

A man popularly known as ‘Bebe’, who resides in Ashin-Nla’s Compound at Opoyeosa area of Ibadan in Oyo State is currently on the run after he was discovered to have allegedly defiled a five-year-old girl, Bimpe (not real name).

The incident was said to have occurred on Saturday, August 24, when the girl’s mother left her at home and went to the market to make some purchases.
The father of the girl, one Olawale (surname withheld) reported at Mapo Police Station on Monday August 26, that the runaway suspect committed the offence on his bed.
Crime Reports learnt that about two months ago, ‘Bebe’ allegedly did the same thing to another girl, Banke (not real name), a five-year-old girl who lives in the same compound, when her mother was also away at the market, but the case was not reported because the parents were prevailed on to forget about the issue.
The story was confirmed by the police image maker in Oyo State, Olabisi Okuwobi-Ilobanafor, who advised the suspect to turn himself in, as he could only hide but not run forever.

Police arraign driver for abandoning pregnant wife

 

The police have arraigned a 27 year old commercial bus driver, Oluwole Ajao, before a Yaba Magistrate’s Court, for allegedly neglecting his five-month pregnant partner, Yewande Awofeso, and attempting suicide while in the police cell.

The police said Ajao abducted Awofeso, 20, from her parent’s custody between December 2012 and July 21, 2013 before impregnating her without her parent’s consent.

He was alleged to have also abandoned Yewande at Somolu General Hospital, Lagos,for seven days, and failed to contribute to her ante-natal care.

The three counts added that after his arrest, he attempted to commit suicide in the police cell by hanging himself “in the burglary of the cell.”

The charge read in part, “That you, Oluwole Ajao, m, between December 2012 and 21st July, 2013 at No 17, Jebina Street, Bariga, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did abduct one Yewande Awofeso, f, aged 20 years, from custody of her parent, with intent to marry and to have sexual intercourse with her, without her parents’ consent and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 267 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State Nigeria, 2011.

“That you, Oluwole Ajao, m, on the July 29, 2013, at about 2pm, at Bariga Police Station, Bariga Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District did attempt to commit suicide by hanging yourself in the burglary of the cell and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 233 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State Nigeria, 2011.”

The defendant said he was not guilty of the charges.

In his testimony, the defendant said he did not abandon his lover in the hospital but had gone to work for money, and had been sending money to her through her sister.

This was confirmed in court as the woman was asked to rise and attest to the statement.

There was also no evidence to show Ajao abducted Awofeso as the police claimed or that their union had not been by mutual consent.

The magistrate, Mrs. M.O Ladipo, said the case lacked merit, saying it was a “love affair” that could be sorted out among the parties involved.

The matter was subsequently struck out.

Robbers attack house, hold occupants hostage

Some occupants of a house  on Oreofero Street in the Bariga area of Lagos State were on Saturday held hostage by a group of armed robbers who attacked them.

The robbers, suspected to be cultists and numbering about 15, were said to have stormed the area about 4.30am.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the occupants, who were tenants in the building, were attacked by the robbers who gained access into the house with a ladder.

An eyewitness, who identified himself as Mr. Kunle Oloyede, said he nearly ran into the robbers as he wanted to do ablution for morning prayer.

He said, “I came out from my shop where I had spent the night to make ablution before saying my morning prayer.

“I heard screams coming from the building. Within 10 minutes, I saw a group of armed robbers running from the house towards my direction.”

Oloyede said he ran back into his shop for safety. From his hiding place, he heard the robbers blaming one another for allowing him to escape.

PUNCH Metro gathered that some occupants of the building were beaten up, while others were attacked with matchetes. It was said that the robbers went from room to room, demanding for money, phones and other valuables.

About N150,000, four laptops, an iphone and a BlackBerry were said to have been carted away by the robbers.

A vehicle belonging to one of the residents of the house was also said to have been vandalised by the robbers who shot sporadically into the air.

It was gathered that other houses in the area had suffered similar fates from robbers in the past.

There was no response from the Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ngozi Braide, when she was contacted.

NDLEA seizes liquid drug disguised as vegetable oil..

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has seized the “first illegal shipment” of liquid methamphetamine to South Africa.

The methamphetamine which weigh seven kilogrammes was disguised as vegetable oil.

 It was learnt that anti-narcotic officials made the discovery at the cargo section of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport Lagos during a routine check.

A customs-licensed agent, who brought the consignment for shipment through a South African Airline flight, was also said to have been arrested by the agency.

 NDLEA Airport Commander, Mr. Hamza Umar, confirmed the arrest and seizure.

He said, “This is the first seizure of liquid methamphetamine. There were six containers in all but only two were found with vegetable oil, while the remaining four contained liquid methamphetamine. With the assistance of our forensic personnel, we were able to extract the crystallised methamphetamine which weighed 7kg.”

Liquid methamphetamine is said to be formed when methamphetamine crystals are dissolved in water. The water can be heated, leaving the drug in solid forms.

The NDLEA had in 2012, uncovered three methamphetamine factories in Lagos and one in Anambra states.  The production of methamphetamine is said to have grave health implications for those involved and others living within the immediate vicinity.

The suspect, a 31-year-old native of Imo State, Ugochukwu Okoroji, said he owned the seized drug.

He said, “I started living in Lagos in 2003, but I started working as a clearing and forwarding agent in 2008. I have been struggling to make ends meet without success. I have already told the NDLEA officers before their examination that the consignment belonged to me. By the time they discovered the drug, I was very unhappy.”

Chairman of NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade, commended the discovery.

He said, “The NDLEA will continue to prevent illegal drug trade through effective drug law enforcement as well as anti-drug abuse advocacy campaign.”

Police arrest 2, recover 2 locally made guns in Enugu

 The police in Enugu have arrested two young men, who were in possession of two locally-made double-barrel guns concealed in a bag while travelling from Enugu to Port Harcourt, Rivers State in a mass transit bus, Sunday.A fake official of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, Prince Gabriel Obasi, from Oduma in Aninri Local Government Area of the state has also been apprehended by the police for impersonation and extortion.
The two suspects now being detained for illegal possession of firearms, were arrested by operatives of 3, Squadron Police Mobile Force, Awkunanaw Enugu on the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway during a stop-and-search on the bus conveying them from Enugu to Rivers State.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the arrests, yesterday, said the two men identified as Ernest Nwodo and Ugochukwu Ifeanyi, boarded the bus at Garki, Enugu and when the policemen on stop-and-search close to the Enugu and Abia State boundary conducted a search on the vehicle with number plate BH 948 ENU, they found the two guns hidden in a Bagco sack.

Fake NAFDAC official

Amaraizu said Prince Obasi was apprehended by the eagle eyed policemen on August 30, 2013 following a report by a victim at Awgu in Enugu State that the suspect visited his shop at Orie Awgu Market, where he presented himself as an official of NAFDAC and demanded his liquor licence.
He was said to have demanded and collected N10,000 from the complainant for selling  local gin popularly, called  kaikai without authorisation.
The suspect, according to Amaraizu, confessed to the crime of impersonating NAFDAC officials after his arrest and pleaded for forgiveness.

Mosquitoes can ‘smell’ humans at night – STUDY

A team of researchers have published in Naturethat the major malaria vector in Africa, the Anopheles gambiae mosquito, is able to smell major human host odorants better at night.
The study reports an integrative approach to examine the mosquito’s ability to smell across the 24-hour day and involved sensory physiological, and behavioral techniques. The researchers examined the role for a major chemosensory family of mosquito proteins, odorant-binding proteins in the daily regulation of olfactory sensitivities in the malarial mosquito.
It is thought that OBPs in the insect antennae and mouth parts function to concentrate odorant molecules and assist in their transport to the actual olfactory receptors, thereby allowing for odorant detection. The team revealed daily rhythmic protein abundance of OBPs, having higher concentrations in the mosquito’s sensory organs at night than during the day. This discovery could change the way we look at protecting ourselves from the disease-carrying insectss.

PHOTO: Linda, 25, breast cancer patient cries for help

WHEN 25-year-old Linda Godwin, a primary school teacher residing at 11, Odofin Street, Olodi Apapa in Lagos,   discovered a tiny lump (seed) in her right breast sometime in January 2012, she had no premonition she was on the threshold of a long and tortuous journey into the agonizing world of cancer.
Today Linda, who hails from Isi Umuozu, Nwangele LGA of Imo State, and is mother of a two and a half-year-old boy, is fighting the battle of her life against late-stage breast cancer.
In the hope to win the battle and survive, she is currently undergoing expensive chemotherapy at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, Idi Araba, Lagos.
Linda who described her ordeal as the worst imaginable, is passionately appealing to all well meaning Nigerians for financial assistance to complete the therapy and to go abroad for further treatment.
Writhing and groaning in pains, she told a moving  tale of anguish, regret and lamentation of the genesis of her ordeal.
“I discovered the lump in my breast by accident and called my husband’s attention to it. Together, we went to a diagnostic centre in Pako, Ajegunle area of Lagos State where a scan was prescribed. The result indicated that the lump was benign. We were told it was actually a cyst and not a malignant tumour as we initially feared.”
Linda said was prescribed Augmentin tablets and some other antibiotics and the couple was made to believe that the drugs would melt off the lump. She didn’t know it then, but the decision to follow the prescribed treatment turned out to be her undoing.
“To my surprise, the seed started growing even faster. The growth was so fast it covered almost half of the breast in no time. I became alarmed and on advice of concerned persons, decided to try out  herbal medicine   which I took orally and applied superficially on the breast. But there was no improvement.”
Linda has since been running from pillar to post in her quest for a cure.  Her search for relief took her to various native doctors, traditional healers and  Churches within and outside Lagos. But it was to no avail.
“I came back to Lagos hopeless. I went the NTA for help but unfortunately, they did not attend to us. My condition went from bad to worse. The lump became hard as stone and eventually covered my entire breast.
“It was at this point in time I was referred to LUTH where  a medical consultant  revealed that it was the  antibiotics  that triggered the abnormal growth of the tumour and worsened my condition. He said I ought to have removed the seed while it was still tender. He advised that the best option was to cut off the breast, but fear gripped me instantly at the thought of cutting off my breast at such a young age. I told my husband about the doctor’s advice and he did not buy the idea either.”
Linda went back home, but as time went by, the breast began rottening and falling off bit by bit until it fell off entirely on its own.
“People thought I was going to die and I had no option than to go back to the hospital. With the little money we could gather, we went to LUTH again. The doctor chided me for not listening to his advice earlier.”
A Medical report from LUTH indicated Linda is being managed for invasive ductal carcinoma, SBR Grade III, synchronous bilateral breast cancer.
“This is a late stage cancer,”  noted Consultant Oncologist and Head of the Department of Radiation/Oncology, LUTH, Professor A.T. Ajekigbe, while confirming Linda was   registered at the surgical outpatient department of the health institution on April 26, 2013. Ajekigbe recalled the patient had earlier reported at the Accident & Emergency on 20th March, 2013 and was diagnosed with right breast ulcer.
Lamenting that most cancer patients present late at the hospital,when only palliative care can be provided, he urged that the  earlier the presentation, the better the mangement. “Let this be a warning  to others.  Examine your body and if you find anything wrong, give a shout and people will come to your assistance.
“When she got to the Accident & Emergency, her case was bad. She had history of difficulty of moving the right hand. Also had some oedema, then she was referred. When she was first seen it was at a late stage. She had the disease at least 15 months earlier before presenting. She had difficulty breathing for about one week  before presenting,” he observed.
Further, Ajekigbe said what Linda has on the right arm is known as Lymphodema. “It is different from oedema. In lymphoedema, the lymphatic system is involved as a result of which the swelling does not easily go down. What we do is to manage it to reduce the complications.
Further, the Consultant Oncologist explained: “The axilla is the armpit and the breast they are related. I call them first cousins. what ever happens to the breast most of the time will stretch to the armpit near it, and what happens to the breast may come from the armpit, they are  so related. It is called the lymphatic drainage system. The upper part of the breast drains into the system. if a doctor examines your breast for whatever reason, the doctor must also look into the armpit to see if there is anything there. he must check the  lymph nodes.
“Occasionally when breast cancer  spreads to the axilla, it blocks the lymphatic drainage system. The fluid comes down quite right, but cannot go back because of the blockage, hence the swollem arm. We advise patients to alleviate that part as often as possible. “Often, we use crepe bandage to push the fluid back. We may also apply  fortified cream through massage to  push the fluid back. We can also use what is known as Flowtron to push back the fluid to provide relief.”
At this point in time, the tumour has spread to Linda’s right arm and hand. She has been placed on an eight-course chemotherapy at three-week intervals. She has currently completed four courses and has four to go. Each treatment course costs approximately N300,000, but when drugs and other essentials are factored in, in addition to requirement of  care and support,  rehabilitation,  radiotherapy, plastic surgery, etc., the cost runs even higher.

To effectively manage the condition, Linda currently requires approximately N500,000 every three weeks over the next one year.
In a passionate appeal, Linda is calling for assistance. “I am on my knees imploring kind-hearted Nigerians at home and abroad to have compassion and come to my aid. I need urgent financial assistance to continue managing this disorder and eventually  go abroad for better treatment. Please help save my life.
Linda’s  husband, Godwin, a native of Oron in Akwa Ibom State and a stylist by profession was overcome with emotion as he spoke about his wife’s predicament.
He lamented how he was  compelled  to sell off his shop at a point to raise money for his wife’s treatment.  “I have visited many places, spiritualists, herbalists, and even specialists and I have spent all I have on the treatment of this illness.
“I cannot even afford my son’s school fees, and even feeding for my family has been a very big problem. My landlord has however been merciful to me as a result of my wife’s condition as I owe him rent for over a year.
“All I can now offer to my wife is only moral support and encouragement. I appeal to Nigerians who can help to please assist me and my family as we hope to fly Linda abroad for further treatment.We shall be ever grateful and God will bless you as you respond.”

Gunmen kill 7, injure 4 in Kano

No fewer than seven persons have been reportedly killed in an attack on Adu village in Atakad Chiefdom, Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State by about 20 gunmen, yesterday.The Atakad people suffered similar fate last May, which led to the killing of no fewer than 30 members of the communities and the displacement of about 10,000 others, who live on the Atakad hills in the council, about 240km south of Kaduna city, the state capital.
However, six Fulani men were later arrested by youths in Zankan village, about 10km from the scene of the incident, after they were seen removing blood stained clothes and wearing new ones to board a waiting vehicle. Police later confirmed the incident.
A resident, who does not want his name mentioned, said: “About 20 men came to Adu village through Zankang forest, shooting and moving from one house to another slaughtering people.
“One person was killed on top of the hills, while some others were slaughtered at Adu village.”
Council boss speaks
Chairman of Kaura Local Government, Kumai Bodu, told Vanguard: “I was woken up this morning around 5am and told that Fulani gunmen had killed seven people and injured some.
“I don’t know what is going on here. If it is the Fulani, then I want to say that there is no basis for trust again.
“We have had all kinds of meeting with them here and they all assured us that no such attacks will ever occur again. We are still studying the situation.”
Arrested
An eyewitness said some gunmen were seen moving to a bus parked by a road side at about 6am by the youths of the area, who immediately alerted the security agencies.
The source said: “When we rounded them up as they were about entering the bus, we called the security agencies and they came and picked them to Manchok Police Station before some military men took them to Kafanchan.”
When contacted, Kaduna State Police Spokesman Aminu Lawan, confirmed that six people have been arrested in connection with the attack.
He said: “There was an attack in Adu village and people were killed. The security men were able to arrest six people. I cannot tell the number of casualties for now.
“However, I know that four were injured and are receiving treatment now. As soon as we get the exact figure, we will make it available to you.
“We have beefed up security in the area and investigations have commenced.”

Group to stand surety for stowaway kid

 
De Raufs’ Volunteer Group, yesterday, formally applied to stand as surety for 13-year-old Daniel Oikhena, who was arrested after emerging miraculously from the wheel compartment of an Arik Air flight from Benin Airport to Lagos on August 24.
Master Oikhena, who had since been kept in custody of the Department of State Services, DSS, had outrun the security personnel at the Benin Airport to board the flight to Lagos.
De Raufs’, a group extolling the leadership qualities of Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, had offered Master Oikhena scholarship up to university level to help him realise his dream of traveling by air legitimately.
Director General of the group, Amitolu Shittu, who confirmed the development yesterday, disclosed that a team of lawyers of the group led by Yinka Muyiwa and Nafiu Adeniyi were at the Shangisha office of SSS to apply for administrative bail for Master Oikhena.
He said: “As you are aware, we have offered the boy scholarship up to university level and we want to follow that up first with his release from custody. The boy has been kept in custody beyond the constitutionally approved period and we are keen to secure his release so that we can fully concentrate on his education,” Shittu explained.
When asked what transpired at the SSS office, Shittu said: “Yes, the SSS officials told our lawyers that the boy was not detained but merely delayed for security reasons and we want to believe them. They are asking that the mother of the boy should come for him and that he would be released Monday.
“On our part, the Lagos State Coordinator of De Raufs’ has been asked to make necessary accommodation arrangements for the boy and his mother, but should they fail to release him as promised, we will be compelled to proceed to court to seek his immediate release,” Shittu threatened.

Pastor rapes woman in church during ‘spiritual bath’

A 46-year-old Pastor, Olamide Sobowale, of Glory Church of Christ Aladura, Oke-Itoku, Abeokuta, Ogun State,  has been ordered to be remanded in prison for allegedly raping a woman while bathing in his church backyard.

Pastor Sobowale, who  was arraigned before a Magistrate Court sitting in Isabo, Abeokuta, yesterday, was accused of  raping one Dupe Makinde, 30, who lives in Isaje, Abeokuta, while taking a spiritual bath  allegedly  recommended by the pastor.
The prosecuting counsel, Paul Etusi, told the court that the accused grabbed the complainant while she was in  a bathroom within the church premises and raped her.
Etusi said the complainant had already put the  soap on her face as she began bathing when the pastor suddenly entered the bathroom, grabbed and  raped her with soap on her face.
According to Etusi, the accused had told Mrs. Makinde that he had a vision about the her and asked her  to come for deliverance in his church.
He said: “He asked the woman to come to the church to take a spiritual bath for her deliverance,  but, while the complainant was taking her bath, the accused barged into the  bathroom, grabbed the woman and  raped her.
“The accused  has committed an offence contrary to section 357 and punishable under section 358 of criminal code of law of Ogun State, Nigeria, 2006.”
Magistrate A. Araba after listening to the prosecuting counsel, ordered that  the accused be remanded  in prison till he gets advice from the Director of Public Prosecution and adjourned the case till September 16,2013.

Two Men Fight Over Woman And Her Five Children

Two men, Anyaso Udeh from Abia State, and another man identified as Gabriel  from Delta State,  are locked in a fierce battle over a grandmother, Mrs Patricia Osadebe, and her five children over who among them is the rightful husband and father of the five children delivered by the woman in Lagos State, Nigeria.
Both men claimed to have married Patricia and had children from her. Gabriel said he married Patricia and paid her bride price and so, she is his legitimate wife and the children belong to him.
Udeh on his part claimed that despite the fact that he did not pay Patricia’s bride price, he is the biological father of the five children.
According to Patricia, she married Gabriel more than 20 years ago and they had a daughter who is now married and has kids. She later left Gabriel in Delta State and came to Lagos and lived with Udeh from Abiriba in Abia State as husband and wife and had five children and she decided to go back to her former husband, Gabriel, last year, with her five children and claimed that the children belong to him.
Udeh is pleading that if Patricia has decided to go back to Gabriel, her family should allow him take custody of his children in the interest of peace and justice.
When Gabriel was contacted, he said he had taken his wife and children back  and declined to make further comment.
The head of Patricia’s family in Lagos, Chief Agumba said the family does not recognize  Udeh because there was no proper marriage between him and their daughter, Patricia. and since Gabriel properly married her according to their culture and tradition in Delta State, the children belong to Gabriel. He said Gabriel is recognized as her husband and if indeed  Udeh wanted to marry Patricia, he would have paid the bride price to the family.
