"Let's Tax The Sun" - New Law Shocks World Press

A new tax on solar power introduced in early July by the Spanish government has been described as "ludicrous" and "stupid" in two leading international publications.
"Let's Tax The Sun": New Law Shocks World Press
US business and finance magazine Forbes pulled no punches in an article titled, "Out of ideas and in debt, Spain sets sights on taxing the sun".
It pointed out that Spain "is one of the top countries in the world with respect to installed photovoltaic (PV) solar energy capacity."
But the author took an incredulous tone and noted: "Spain is now attempting to scale back the use of solar panels – the use of which they have encouraged and subsidized over the last decade – by imposing a tax on those who use the panels."
She added: "You get the feeling that government officials were out of ideas, stared up at the sky one day and thought, 'I’ve got it! We’ll tax the sun!'"
Australia's Business Spectator published a story on the same subject on Wednesday under the headline, "Spain's solar stupidity".
It said: "Imposed by decree, the reform aims to raise money for tackling a €26 billion debt to power producers which the state has built up over the years in regulating energy costs and prices."
The article quoted Industry Minister Jose Manuel Soria who introduced the law as saying, "I support 'autoconsumo' [independent power generation by households]... but the power system has infrastructure, grids that the rest of us Spaniards who are in the system have to pay for. And we pay for it through our electricity bill."
Both articles also quoted Teresa Ribera, who served as secretary of state for the environment under the former Socialist administration.
She responded to Soria's statement, saying: "It's like asking cyclists to pay a levy to keep open the petrol stations they don't use."
Now a senior adviser to the Paris-based Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations (IDDRI), Ribera said the law was "illogical in terms of energy efficiency and costs" and "a serious invitation by the government for citizens to become anti-system."
Business Spectator interviewed people who plan to ignore the new law, including Sergio Pomar, chief executive of energy-efficient installation firm INEL.
He said: "If I spend €600 to install solar panels and get fined €6 million let the judge decide."
Private individuals who fail to hook their solar panels up to the national grid to be metered and taxed could face fines of up to €30 million ($40 million) under the new law.
Forbes magazine wrote: "It seems ludicrous."

Star Actor Rapes Young Girl, Tells Her He Was Getting Rid Of Evil

Coronation Street star Michael Le Vell raped a young girl as she clutched a teddy bear and warned her that if she told anyone she would 'die', a court heard today.
The actor allegedly told the girl, 'It's okay, just keep calm, stay asleep... I'm going to get rid of the evil,' as he sexually abused the youngster, Manchester Crown Court was told.

He also allegedly told her: 'It's our little secret, no-one needs to know otherwise ... you'll die and the evil will come over you.'
Le Vell, 48, who plays car mechanic Kevin Webster in the ITV soap, is facing 12 charges in all - five counts of rape, three of indecent assault, two counts of sexual activity with a child and two of causing a child to engage in sexual activity.
Le Vell, who is on trial under his real name of Michael Turner, denies the offences and shook his head saying 'not guilty' in a strong voice as the charges were put to him before his trial began.
The first time he raped the girl, she clutched one teddy bear while Le Vell put another teddy bear over her mouth, it is alleged.
'It's okay. I'm making the evil stop once and for all now. It'll be fine,' he allegedly told the girl.
He then raped the youngster, kissed her on the cheek and left, the court heard.
The jury heard that on another occasion Le Vell raped the girl.
'He did not say anything this time, and after he had finished, he just got up and left,' Ms Laws said.
'She recalls that afterwards she felt sick,' the prosecutor added.

PHOTOS: Hundreds of Tourists Washed Away by Tidal Wave

They came in their droves, all hoping to catch a glimpse of what is considered to be one of Mother Nature's more unusual spectacles.
However, these spectators unwittingly became part of the show when a huge tidal bore burst through a dam and spilled over the riverbank, sweeping scores of tourists off their feet.
One moment these bystanders stood transfixed at the banks of the Qiantang River in Haining, in east China's Zhejiang province, waiting to witness the natural phenomenon.

Swept away: Police try valiantly to protect the crowds from the tidal surge, including women and children, but the sheer weight and speed of the water carries off everyone in its path
The next they were running for their lives as a huge wave came crashing towards them, engulfing the crowds while others looked on helplessly.
While there were no fatalities, more than 20 people weran annual tradition for residents nearby, attracting hundreds of visitors each year.
The astonishing natural phenomenon, which is an abrupt uprising of river water, happens when the moon's gravity influence tides from the sea, moving them upstream, resulting in the mesmerising bore.

More than 20 people were injured by the rogue wave, with many needing to be carried away for treatment.
Despite the authorities warning onlookers to stand back from the river bank, many fail to heed the advice and end up trying to out-run the wave when it heads towards them.
Bores only occur in a few locations throughout the world, usually in areas with a large tidal range and where incoming tides are funnelled into a shallow, narrowing lake or river.
China's Qiantang River boasts the largest bore, up nine metres - or 30 feet high - and travelling up to 25mph.HORROR PHOTOS: Hundreds of Tourists Washed Away by Tidal Wave

Standing her ground: A Chinese television news reporter, keen to get the best possible location for her piece to camera, is unaware of the huge wave behind her. Thankfully, she was not injured
The annual event is becoming a bit of a headache for authorities, who each year tell spectators to keep their distance from the tidal surge.
But, each year, daredevils and unsuspecting spectators stray too close to the river's edge, erroneously thinking they can outrun the wall of water.
In September 2008 a group of American surfers convinced the Chinese government to allow them to surf a section of the river.
Personal watercraft were used to safely transport the surfers in and out of the tidal bore.

PHOTO: Lady Gaga Opens iTunes Festival

Lady Gaga has opened the iTunes festival in London, playing a set of entirely new material.
photo
The 60-minute show marked The pop star's comeback, after a broken hip caused her to cut short her Born This Way Ball tour earlier this year.
"To say that I've missed you, it's a bit of an understatement," she told her fans on stage at London's Roundhouse.
Featuring pig men in boiler suits and multiple costume changes, the show was streamed live around the world.
In the audience were celebrity fans including Adele, Niall Horan from One Direction and TV personality Arlene Phillips.
For fans, it was the first taster of Gaga's forthcoming album ArtPop, as seven songs - including Manicure, I Wanna Be With You and Swine - were played for the first time.
Many attended the show in a dress code dictated by the 27-year-old on Twitter - including "bedazzled pig snouts" and "trash bags or artclothes".

Ebube Nwagbo's Casual Look.. Hot Or Not?

Hot Or Not?

Wow!!! How Did It Happen? Who Impregnated This Lady?

Wow!! This is awesome but the moment I saw this photo it  got me thinking wild. Who is the guy who did it? As a matter of fact, I know there are many guys who may not be comfortable to have done it with this lady, not to talk of doing it several times with her and eventually getting her pregnant.

Also, I really admire the woman's never-say-die spirit. She is very happy with herself, despite everything.

Actress Omoni Oboli Praises Omotola –– "You Are The Best"

I am Omoni Oboli and I represent Naija!

Our country is littered with success stories that have shaped us into who we are. We have icons that have, through their consistency, paved the way for many of us to walk right through. Many have done it unwittingly by just focusing on achieving their personal goals and in their resolve to break through the stereotypes, disenfranchisement and stigmas they have shown the rest of us the endless possibilities in their chosen fields. Others have done it with a plan to leave a trail for others to follow.
I will continue to celebrate these icons that I consider to be the true role models for our youth to emulate in our nation. One such icon is our very own Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde.

The original Omosexy who has been tagged the African Magic.
Omotola waltzed into the movie industry before it was nicknamed Nollywood and took her place at the top of the industry as a leading lady like she actually owned the place. She fits into it easily like one who knew that she was born to do this. Her consistency at the top is evidence of her prowess at delivering every role consistently from when she stole our hearts in the movie Mortal Inheritance.

The ever-growing fans of Nollywood have been held spellbound by her believability in all her varied roles. At such a young age when many didn’t know their left from right she understood the responsibility that came with being the leading lady. We saw her cry, laugh, rejoice, explore and display other emotions and adventures that Nollywood has been consistently propelling us actors through in the last 21 years of its existence so that we have come to believe that we know her personally.

With her own style and wits, Omotola has somehow shown us her life and yet kept the personal bit intact, even though she got into marriage at an age many consider to be too young. She has stayed in the marriage when many casualties of failed marriages litter our nation and our industry. She simply defied the odds! Even though pilots are reputed to be philanderers, she has been successfully married to one for many years. Actors have a global reputation of divorces, citing the flimsiest excuses for their actions, but she has been steadfast in her marriage.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not putting down actors for their divorces because many other industries surpass them in divorce rates. I’m just showing that these are perceived notions the world over. Many of them, especially the actresses, have had to endure strenuous relationships due to their celebrity status in the hands of their spouses,. Through it all, our Omosexy remains a pillar of virtue as an example to many that it is possible to stay focused, achieve success in any field of endeavour and still maintain a good family.

She continues to break grounds globally, being celebrated for what we already knew she is, one of the most influential figures of our time! This is due to the impact of our film industry, Nollywood. This industry that many do not yet see its direct and indirect impact on our society, but has broken grounds the world over. This Nollywood that gave the opportunity to many of us to find our voice globally. Where we would have been big fishes in our small pond, we find that the world hangs on our every word and action. This is such a huge responsibility for us to bear, and Omotola has held her place there such that she has been commended for it consistently.

I don’t need to talk about all the awards she has acquired over the years, and I don’t know if she can count how many awards she has received till date, but we know that she has not failed to deliver on most of her performances. The Bible says that a man’s gifts makes room for him and brings him before great men, kings or captains of industries, and it certainly has in her case. She has been honoured for her performance on screen and for her activities off screen. She has lent her voice to many worthwhile causes and championed many of her own.

She is the mother of four children and has managed to stay in shape, not only for the screen, but for her husband. She is truly an icon in the movie industry and in Nigeria as a whole. She has shown that with hard work, consistency, diligence, focus and a desire to achieve, there is nothing that can stop your rise to the top of your game.

I try to celebrate the icons in our nation that are worthy of emulating so that our youth and our people can begin to heal from the damage of inconsistent, morally decadent and corrupt role models that we have followed in the past and start chatting a new course for ourselves by looking to people whose lives have paved a walkway to greatness.

Remember to go out there and start or continue buying and watching our movies, like Anchor Baby, Last Flight to Abuja, Doctor Bello and many other titles out there that are good quality products. My movie, Render to Caesar, will be in the cinemas sometime in November. It promises to be a must watch for everyone. I’m starring alongside Gbenga Akinnagbe (The Wire, Lottery Ticket), Wale Ojo (Phone Swap, Johnny English), Lucky Ejim (The Tenant), Kalu Ikeagwu, Dede Mabiaku, Bimbo Manuel and many others.

Our future depends on your consistency in supporting us so that we can keep smiling.

PHOTO: 12-Year-Old, Others Arrested For Pipeline Vandalism

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has arrested 30 people for alleged pipeline vandalism in Isheri Olofin area of Ogun State.

photo The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has arrested 30 people for alleged pipeline vandalism in Isheri Olofin area of Ogun State.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the suspects were arrested on Saturday morning after a combined team of NSCDC officials from the Lagos and Ogun state commands engaged in a gun duel with some pipeline vandals.

Among those arrested are a 12-year-old boy, Azeez Ajani; a 13-year-old boy, Michael Oyedotun, two pastors, six women and 20 others.

The Commandant, Ogun State Command, Mr. Akinwande Aboluwoye, said over 20,000 litres of stolen fuel were recovered from the vandals.

He said, “We got a tip-off that the vandals were going to operate early on Saturday morning, so we intensified surveillance. They were arrested with their canoes and 400 jerry cans of petrol, each jerry can contained 50 litres.

“The vandals had engaged us in a gun duel and when the heat became too much, they abandoned the products, jumped into the water and escaped. However, we were able to apprehend their cohorts who live in the area.”

Aboluwoye said the canoes had been set ablaze while security had been beefed up in the area.

A resident, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, said the suspects carried out pipeline vandalism in an organised fashion.

She said, “The men usually come at midnight to break pipelines. The children assist them in loading the petrol into kegs, which are later kept inside the houses of residents. The role of the women is to source for buyers who usually come during the day to buy the fuel at cheap prices.

“When I realised this trend, I quickly informed the NSCDC to avert a fire disaster.”

The suspects, however, denied the allegations, saying they were not pipeline vandals, but new residents of the area.

The 12-year-old suspect said, “I am a tailor’s apprentice in the area. My father is late and my mother lives in Ajah. I don’t know anything about pipeline vandalism. I leave home very early everyday and I come in late at night so I never know what is happening in the area.

“The only thing I know is that when I wake up in the morning, I usually see jerry cans in the area.”

The 13-year-old suspect, who also claimed to be a tailor’s apprentice, said he was about to bathe in the Ogun River when he was apprehended by the NSCDC officials.

“My parents live in Ifo, I only moved to the area recently. Please, I know nothing about this. My parents don’t even know that I have been arrested.”

A pastor, Nikuleyi Adesola, said he was arrested while leaving church with two other female members.

“I am a carpenter and also a pastor. I live in a mission house. I was with two female members when the civil defence men order us to come out. I am not a vandal,” he said.

The commandant said the suspects would be charged to court, adding that past investigations had shown that women and children were also involved in the illegitimate business.
